Chris is running Legacy at YMG on Sundays starting in March. He said he will be advertising it this week and next week. Just letting people know. I will be playing frequently.

Jared, I would recommend not playing the robots (consistently) if you want a good "gateway" deck. I would recommend playing Merfolk (which is mono-colored and also not that expensive, while being a real metagame deck). Here is a sample list:

    Artifacts
    4 Aether Vial

    Creatures
    4 Cursecatcher
    4 Lord Of Atlantis
    4 Merrow Reejerey
    4 Silvergill Adept
    3 Wake Thrasher

    Enchantments
    4 Standstill

    Instants
    4 Daze
    4 Force Of Will
    4 Stifle

    Legendary Artifacts
    2 Umezawa's Jitte

    Basic Lands
    12 Island

    Lands
    4 Mutavault
    3 Wasteland

The deck is relatively cheap by Legacy standards (because of the high number of basics) and should be reasonably simple to put together. I have a set of Forces I'm not using, so you can use them for now, leaving only Wasteland as a $ card (I assume you have vials).

Sideboard varies on what you expect. Merfolk naturally has fairly good matchups against decks with islands and combo and is weak to decks like Aggro-loam, Zoo, and Dredge, but if you don't see any of those decks, it's perfectly fine not to sideboard for them. A sample sideboard is as follows:

    1 Relic Of Progenitus
    2 Tormod's Crypt
    2 Merfolk Sovereign
    2 Sower Of Temptation
    4 Back To Basics
    1 Hibernation
    2 Mindbreak Trap
    1 Submerge

The Legacy metagame is far too diverse for me to summarize in one post. Suffice to say that if you go to a large Legacy tournament I would not expect any given deck to exceed 10% of the field, although it is possible for that to happen. Stephen Menendian wrote an article recently called "the 50 decks of Legacy" which is a reasonable summary of T1 and T2 archetypes you may face.

The "big" decks are as follows:

CounterTop, Zoo, Canadian Threshold, Merfolk, Lands!, Aggro-Loam

    Other archetypes include:

Dredge, Enchantress, Ad Nauseum Tendrils, Dream Halls combo, Survival, Goblins, Burn, Belcher, Arma Stax, etc.

so basically play the deck you like to play and roll the dice. not much point in metagaming.

Essentially, yes. Legacy is a very match-up dependent field. I would advise you play a deck that is powerful and hope you avoid your bad match-ups.
