    Charlestown PTQ Empty Charlestown PTQ

Post  Mojochachee Mon Feb 22, 2010 4:12 pm

Well no one burned down the barn this weekend with their performance as a matter of fact it was the nut low for a couple of reasons.

    1. I played a deck with Aven Mindcensor......that card is straight up garbage outside of the t1 GW budget deck. To top it off I didn't play with 3 artifact lands in my build which would have won me a couple of games alone if I had them.
    2. Erik punted an almost unloseable match against Ryan Durney.... (sorry Erik)
    3. Ben was playing a NonBo in his Bloodmoon deck....
    4. My toughest match was against a GIRL who cast browbeat no less than two times in each of our three games....after the match I had to sit and watch her boyfriend berate her for losing a game he didn't even watch...awk.
    5. Noah got dream crushed by his own water bottle.....that's probably the worst......
    6. Adam played the deck that you all bagged on and performed the best..Good job Adam. (What was your final record?) Seriously though don't play that garbage again.

So lets put it behind us and focus on this weekend and get someone the blue envelope or at the very least in the t8.

I will not be rocking Jace the Mind Sculptor this weekend even though I did get the fantastic opportunity to Jace someone out in rd 2.

    It's going to be this.....

    1 Academy Ruins
    4 Dark Depths
    1 Dimir Aqueduct
    2 Island
    4 River of Tears
    4 Sunken Ruins
    2 Swamp
    3 Tolaria West
    3 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
    24 lands

    4 Dark Confidant
    4 Vampire Hexmage
    8 creatures

    4 Chrome Mox
    1 Compulsive Research
    2 Duress
    1 Echoing Truth
    1 Engineered Explosives
    4 Muddle the Mixture
    1 Repeal
    1 Smother
    2 Sword of the Meek
    4 Thirst for Knowledge
    3 Thopter Foundry
    4 Thoughtseize
    28 other spells

    Sideboard
    4 Chalice of the Void
    3 Darkblast
    1 Echoing Truth
    4 Leyline of the Void
1 Oona, Queen of the Fae
    2 Threads of Disloyalty
    15 sideboard cards

    OR... This.....

    1 Academy Ruins
    3 Dark Depths
    3 Island
    4 River of Tears
    1 Seat of the Synod
    4 Sunken Ruins
    1 Swamp
    2 Tolaria West
    3 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
    1 Vault of Whispers
    23 lands

    4 Dark Confidant
    3 Trinket Mage
    4 Vampire Hexmage
    3 Vendilion Clique
    14 creatures

    1 Aether Spellbomb
    1 Chalice of the Void
    4 Chrome Mox
    1 Engineered Explosives
    3 Muddle the Mixture
    1 Pithing Needle
    1 Slaughter Pact
    1 Smother
    4 Thirst for Knowledge
    4 Thoughtseize
    2 Umezawa's Jitte
    23 other spells

    Sideboard
    2 Darkblast
    2 Duress
    2 Extirpate
    1 Gatekeeper of Malakir
    1 Into the Roil
    1 Smother
    2 Sower of Temptation
    3 Threads of Disloyalty
    1 Umezawa's Jitte
    15 sideboard cards

My only thought about the second list is that I would either want to play with a single Sigil of Distinction or Basilisk Collar (firststriking deathtouching lifelinkers are decent)

Justin is probably going to be rocking the GB Depths Build and Mike Gemme will probably be trying to combo off with the elves.

Soo....What are we playing, what are we missing, what is your SB plan and what can be done to improve any of the above.

Are you guys play testing this Wednesday?

    Also....this is Andy

This lists are both fine, is collar really better than just running jitte #2?

Elves seems to outperforming most of the other "best decks" right now.

i ended up at 5-1-2. the game i lost or the ones i drew were mainly due to my inexperience with the matchups with that deck more than my deck being outclassed.. im tweaking the list a little but im still playing it in Ctown. a few more muddles, negates in the board over thoughtsiezes.. and perhaps either a basic swamp (that can be fetched with paths) or a blue artifact land.

the second list of yours looks the most interesting..
u/w thopter was out in force this past weekend and that deck puts a whole world of hurt on the Dark depths version of it. i wouldnt be going anywhere near a DDT deck for the coming ptq's as there is soo much hate being put in for them (dampening matrixes and leylines/extirpates) that the better decks will be prepared for it. for crissakes, i saw the guy i drew with in rnd 4 lose the next round to someone with 4 main deck extirpates... wtf?

I honestly think that if you know the deck well and can pilot it through the various matchups, you'll be better suited with a list that can't be recited card for card by most people and they won't know how to respond or what to tutor for.

i think you'd be better off putting the thopter combo into the trinket mage shell than dark depths. having an endgame where you gain life and stabilize the board creature wise vs boros/zoo is much better imho than randomly being able kill them with a 20/20 on turn 2/3/4 every once in a great while. everyone is running white for paths or bant charms. V Cliques were an mvp for me and i cant tell you how many times i threw the sword onto one to prevent it from dying to race whatever they had on the ground.

watching that guy berate his girlfriend was pretty painful. almost as painful as they guy who watched his girlfriend give away the match to me with a draw when there were multiple times she could have won and misplayed. He just sat there while she did it and I looked at him and we both knew she had misplayed but weren't saying anything.

the top 8 at the tj's ptq was really janky though....

-2 elves lists that never combo'd off to win, just aggro'd and attacked (at least in the matches i watched of theirs).. and the pilots themselves could barely walk/talk through the steps for the combo (which was probably why they rarely went for it).

1 deathcloud... pretty much a bye for any deck with blue in it

1 hive mind.. same as above.. runs over aggro decks, but dies to a spellstutter sprite

1 u/w thopter/tezz - the deck to play that day.. beats aggro and beats DDT... im assuming this guy won as i left as the top 8 was starting

1 g/b/x deck that looked like it was either dark zoo or a bad rock deck.

1 scapeshift deck (u/g/r).. the kid that lucked me out of the running.. who was litterally shaking when he was playing his top 8 match he was so nervous.

    1 deck i cant remember...

there was a ton of zoo and thopter depths there but they all seemed to get hated out by the later rounds by either the combo decks or the u/w thopter tez decks.

I would gladly play Red Faeries again. I felt like the deck was fine, I just got paired against Boros twice, which is a horrid matchup. Still, no deck in this format has all good matchups, so if you want good matchups you have to have bad ones too. Sometimes I think the pairing gods have it out for me.

Weird. Well, you should still play Red Faeries. As long as you avoid getting paired twice against Boros you should be okay. Check out the Faeries thread for my list.

Yeah I know that guy who beat you with Mono-White Weenie: his name is Brandon and I know him from when I lived in Vermont. Brandon always brings some homebrew or atleast something under the radar and tends to go like 4-4 at these events. He's a good guy and brings these interesting decks but they lack consistency.

I will be playing Dredge on Saturday as I am convinced it is an extremely powerful deck. This next time I'll be sure to mulligan all of the 1-landers. Several times last Saturday (probably 3 three times, actually) I picked up a hand with two crabs, ideas unbound, one land, some other irrelevant stuff, and kept it. 2 x Crab + Ideas Unbound is the God Hand - it is the hand that lets me win on Turn Two as long as I have a second land. The problem was I always assumed I would draw a second land soon and I never did, which isn't surprising in a deck with only 19 land.
No more 1-landers for Mr. Goulet.
The Krosan Grips in the SB worked out quite well; I am thinking about keeping them over Maelstrom Pulse. The great majority of Dredge heat is an artifact or enchantment that sits in play while I have priority. Grip is the way to go.

I cannot playtest on Wednesday as I am delivering Oral Argument in Moot Court that night. Do people want to get together Tuesday or Thursday? I am happy to host people over my place.

i can test any night this week...

does anyone happen to have or want to build/proxy up the elf deck?

they will be out there this weekend and the biggest issue is really knowing how the elf deck works so you know how to attack it.

I'm in favor of testing Wednesday or Friday.

Playing Blood Moon Zoo again, this time without the silly Paths main.

    I'm short:
    1 Arid Mesa
    1 Verdant Catacombs
    4 Lightning Helix

    I still have:
Ghost Quarter, Cannonist and Grudge from Jared
    Fallout from Wesley
1 Arid Mesa each from Chingsung, Noah, and Andy
Tarmogoyf, Temple Garden, and Sacred Foundry from Noah
    Noble Hierarch from Erik

I r haz fetches. I will be hanging out at Panda before class tomorrow, so if you come I will likely see you there.

Eh, I had a UW control list that I was working on that I abandoned because it just felt like it wasn't doing anything broken. Still, perhaps you can tweak it a bit to your liking and end up with something good. The original intention was to avoid the hate and it worked reasonably well but I got topdecked out a lot in testing, which bothered me.

i may head to either panda if people are meeting up or YMG if noone is so i can harass the sealed deckers there into drafting or testing extended.
